Grand Opening of the new Las Positas Vineyards and Winery in Livermore Valley

Las Positas Vineyards and the Maier Family invite wine lovers to join with them at the Grand Opening of their new winery and tasting room in Livermore on Sunday August 14, 2011.  The address of the winery is 1828 Wetmore Road, located near the junction of Wetmore and Arroyo Roads.  Festivities will begin at 12 Noon and continue until 5PM include:
  • Live Music provided by the Jesse Hendricks Trio
  • Appetizers will be offered
  • Special Grand Opening Discounts on Current Releases
The Maiers were raised in the bay area and were high school sweethearts. Lothar went on to be the CEO of Linear Technology, a Fortune 500 company, and Lisa was an accomplished CPA. Las Positas Vineyards began when Lothar and Lisa Maier purchased a 20 acre vineyard on Kalthoff Common in the southern end of Livermore Valley in 2006 andplanted small blocks of Petite Sirah, Chardonnay, Barbera, Tempranillo, Petite Verdot, Malbec and several clones of Cabernet Sauvignon.

This investment demanded a name that will depict the quality of the wine it will produce. Research brought up the name Rancho Las Positas, the original 40,000 acre property founded by Robert Livermore when he moved to this valley. The name depicted the marriage of the old world craftsmanship of winemaking and the new world pioneer spirit chronicled in the history of Livermore Valley.

Las Positas opened their first tasting room at 682 Pinnacle Road just off Greenville Road north of Lawrence Livermore Labs as they prepared to build a new winery estate on Kalthoff Common.  But then the opportunity arose to purchase the winery facility on Wetmore Road.  Along with the new wine production facility and tasting room, the property also has approximately 20 acres of vineyards planted inCabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Petite Sirah, Syrah and Nebbiolo.  The new Wetmore Road vineyard compliments the originalKalthoff vineyard. This same land was the same land that Charles Wetmore grew wine that won the 1889 Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition, the first California winery to win such an award, almost 100 years before the Judgment of Paris featured in the movie “Bottleshock”.

This year, Las Positas Vineyards wines have been honored with three medals of distinction for quality at prestigious annual events including a GOLD Medal from the California State Fair for the 2008 Barbera.

The Grand Opening is also an opportunity to meet the new Las Positas winemaker, Charlie Kidd.  Charlie grew up in Chico and graduated from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.  After four years with wineries in San Luis Obispo County, he moved to Texas where he worked for two other wineries in the last five years.  He is certainly happy to be able to return to California and join the Las Positas team.

Las Positas Vineyards is a vineyard and winery dedicated to the marriage of Old World craftsmanship and New World pioneer spirit in the production of world class wine from our estate in California’s Livermore Valley.  We offer small lots of handcrafted wines that epitomize our commitment to the earth and her fruit.  We promise our consumers and business partners to be true to the ideal of “good wine starts with good vines and soil.”
