True Grit Wine from Parducci

Remember the old-style westerns of your youth, where the good guys won and the bad guys lose.  They gave you time on the range, under the stars in the great outdoors.  You remember the slow clop of your horse’s hooves on the hard dirt.  And one of those great western stars was John Wayne, and you think back to the movie True Grit where he won his Academy Award.

Parducci partners Tom and Tim Thornhill were from Texas and those old-style westerns were important to them. And at Parducci they were making bold and expressive wines including their famous Mendocino County Petite Sirah.  Someone once called their Petite Sirah the “John Wayne of red wines”.  In honor of John Wayne and the memories he brought to them, they named their Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon “True Grit” for wines that were fearlessly expressive, just like The Duke.

Parducci, located in Mendocino County, one of westernmost counties in California, symbolizes the dreams of those who live in the Wild West.  They produce wines that are bold, expressive and deliver true flavors and quality. Parducci and the Thornhills also honor the land growing healthy vineyards and striving to conserve California’s precious water.

Parducci was founded in 1932 in Mendocino County by the Parducci Family from Tuscany, Italy.  They soon realized that the diverse geology, geography and climate of their new-found home would make it possible to produce world-class wines.

True Grit Reserve 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon – This wine includes 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 5% Syrah grapes selectively sourced from their vineyards in Mendocino County.  It is aged for 18 months in 20% new French oak barrels, but mostly neutral barrels.  It has a nice intense nose with a touch of toast, leather and dark fruit.  On the palate you will enjoy the ripe fruit, in particular black cherry, along with cranberry, cassis, dark carob, cinnamon, clove, allspice and vanilla.  This leads to a long substantial finish with the perfect balance of tannin.

True Grit Reserve 2012 Petite Sirah - This wine has 91% Petite Sirah, 8% Syrah and 1% Grenache fruit from their vineyards in Mendocino County.  It is ages in 43% new American oak and 57% seasoned American and French Oak.  It has an inky dark red-purple color.  The very enticing nose is wonderful with a blend of ripe fruit, white pepper, vanilla and just the right amount of toast.  As you taste this wine you will be very pleased with the great balance of fruits including blackberry, black raspberry and a blend of spices including cinnamon plus white and black pepper.  You will certainly detect dark chocolate, caramel and a touch of leather.  Many Petite Sirahs are heavy in the tannins but this one is easy to drink yet still delivers all of the boldness and flavors you expect in a Petite Sirah.

Like John Wayne himself, these wines deliver strength and body, but still have that comfortable feeling.
