Acorn Winery in Russian River Valley, co-fermented field blend wines

Acorn Winery and Certified Sustainable Alegria Vineyards in Sonoma County’s Russian River Valley is a unique winery south of Healdsburg along Highway 101. Alegria Vineyards was purchased by Betsy and Bill Nachbaur in 1990. Spread over Alegria Vineyards 27 acres on alluvial, rocky clay-loan bench land soils are over 60 grape varietals.







Many of the grapes are sold and used by other winemakers. Acorn Winery uses only grapes from the Alegria Vineyards by winemakers Bill Nachbaur and Clay Mauritson. The grapes are interplanted, harvested and fermented together, creating balanced, food-friendly wines made in the old-world style. Bill Nachbaur, who lives in the middle of the vineyard, believes strongly in a hands-on approach to grapegrowing and winemaking. Over the 25 seasons that he has farmed this vineyard he has acquired an intimate knowledge of every vine on the property, visiting each vine a dozen times for pruning, leaf removal, crop thinning, shoot positioning and more.

Besides the main grapes of Zinfandel, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot, Dolcetto, Sangiovese and Petite Sirah, there are a wide range of less common and rare grape varietals interspersed among those vines including Alicante Bouschet, Negrette, Plavac Maili, Carignane, Trousseau, Petit Bouschet, Muscat Noir, Peloursin, Baclan, Cinsaut, Palomino, Monbadon and many more. Some of these blocks, such as the Zinfandel were planted as early as 1890.

The 2014 Rosato is fields blend of 25% Dolcetto, 24% Sangiovese, 24% Zinfandel, 17% Cabernet Franc and 10% Syrah. It is a nicely balanced wine with a mixed blend of aromas and flavors of red fruit including strawberry and cherry and a touch of tropical fruit.

The 2012 Sangiovese is a field blend of 98% Sangiovese (with seven different clones), 1% Canaiolo and 1% Mammolo. You will enjoy the black cherry and black fruit aromas and flavors with a nice touch of earthiness.

The 2012 Axiom Syrah includes 98% Syrah and 2 % Viognier. Ripe blackberry shines in both the aroma and the flavors with a touch of coffee, leather and earthiness.

The 2011 Medley got a platinum medal and 94 points at the Sommelier Challenge. It is a field blend of 29% Syrah, 23% Zinfandel, 13% Alicante Bouschet, 10% Cinsaut, 8% Muscats, 5% Dolcetto, 5% Petite Sirah and 7% other varieties. This wine truly shows the style of wine from Acorn with ripe red and black fruits, and earthiness with a touch of spice and floral qualities.
